São João da Pesqueira

"Heart of the Douro", the town of São João da Pesqueira watch the river Douro from a high plateau, involving an immense territory of the oldest demarcated region of the world, classified as a World Heritage Site.

The presence of Jews in São João da Pesqueira date back to the first half of the 15th century. The vestiges of their community were recorded in the urbanism of the town as can be seen in the old Jewry (Rua dos Gatos) due to its irregularity and different housing constructions.

The southern villages such as Riodades and Paredes da Beira also have important relics like Hebrew inscriptions engraved on the granite of old dwellings. In Trevões, an medieval village it is recommended to visit the other Rua dos Gatos which, like the first, is also associated with the Jewish heritage.

Visit and discover the “Sefarad'ouro”.
